Yet another action packed year has been completed by students at the Carnalea Karate Club.
Way back on 11 February 2006 a number of students demonstrated their skills at the Martial Arts Extravaganza in Bangor Leisure Centre along side their colleagues from Kick Boxing, Ju Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do.
On St Patrick's Day at the North West International Open in Donegall; Levi Kane, Sarah Brashaw and Kate Keenan claimed the club's first team Kata Gold winning the Under 13 year event. Sarah and team mate Glen Bailie both proved their class by winning gold in individual kata and kumite respectively. Other medals were won by Sarah Shields, Sarah Keenan, Neil Bailie, Rhiannon Wells and Claire McPeake.
The highlight of the grading on 25 March was Claire McPeake and Levi Kane earning their purple belts.
In May, instructor David Brashaw saw his suggestion for World Beaters Wall of Fame for Bangor Leisure Centre being getting front page news on the County Down Spectator, and in the same month being honoured by Kate Hoey MP at Westminster for his karate achievements.
At the club's annual Fun Day on 30 April the top Awards were as follows: Student of the Year, Sarah Brashaw; Willis Cup, Sarah Shields; and Spirit Award to Rhiannon Wells. There was also a double gold win in her first karate competition for Niamh Pang.
In June at the North Down Sports Awards, brothers Neil and Glen Bailie were commended on their international successes by Lady Sylvia Hermon, MP.
At the Carlow summer camp in August young Craig Brashaw and his older sister Sarah had great fun training with the legendary Wellington brothers from Wales.
At the Carlow International on 7 October the club took its first ever under 12 years team to this event. They did not disappoint. A great weekend was had by all, with exceptional performances from Sophie Stewart, Curtis Shaw, Courtney Majury, Charlie Edgar, Conor Porter, Craig Brashaw, Rhiannon Wells and Andrew Wilson. Northern Ireland international Sarah Brashaw leading the way by winning three silver medals.
On 10 October, with financial help from our sponsor Brian Lockhart Motors, Bangor
combined with some fundraising money, the club was delighted to eventually be able to purchase its own set of karate training mats and free standing kick bag.
On 21 October 2006 the club had its best achievement in its history ever by junior students. Not since Kealin and Kevin Murdock won silver and bronze respectively in the WIKF association European Championship in 2002, has any junior student been earmarked as world class potential. This year
we were delighted when four students were selected to represent Northern Ireland at the WKC World Championships in Hannover . They were Glen and Neil Bailie, Claire McPeake and Sarah Brashaw. Unfortunately due to administrative difficulties Sarah could not make it this time. However the other three certainly made a point of getting Northern Ireland noticed on the world stage for their karate technical ability. Amazingly each of them made their respective finals at a first attempt at the massive event, with Glen bringing home Northern Ireland 's first ever Junior World medal (silver) for kata.
At the Family Open Day on 2 December the club was delighted to have Mayor of North Down, Councillor Alan Leslie as its special guest.
The year ended with a grading on 16 December when Claire McPeake and Levi Kane were duly awarded 3rd kyu brown and brown mon belt respectively.
No doubt 2007 will provide new challenges for the Carnalea students, a hatful more medals, many personal achievements and as always, lots of fun.
