Carnalea Karate Kids do North Down proud again

Last Sunday 19 October, Carnalea Karate Club competed for the first time in the Ulster Karate Championships in Maysfield Leisure Centre. Sixteen students from the club entered the competition and came away with eleven medals.
Hundreds of competitors travelled from all over Ulster and as far away as Donegall, to compete in the championships. However, this did not mean the team from Bangor made it any easier for them.
The first gold for the team went to Victoria Lindsay who won the children's kata. Neil Bailie collected a bronze in the junior kata and went on to lead the under 13 team which also consisted of brother Glen, and Kurtis Kane to silver. This result was decided after a tie of matches in the final and a count back of points scored. Current All Ireland junior boys sparring champion, Kurtis claimed gold in the boys under 13 event. A great first time performance by Issac Usman earned him a bronze in the same category. Glen Bailie fought a bitter battle in the final of the boys under 5ft category and in the end had to settle for silver. Sean-Pol Murdock fought off his team mate Nico Espana for the bronze medal in the boys aged 8 category. In the girls aged 8 category Sarah Brashaw, in her first competition at this level, lost out in extra time by a point to her team mate, Levi Kane. There were also great performances by Jacob Usman, Christopher Lindsay, Ned Stewart and Jonathon Murray. Michael Wallace, John Brown and Sam Lewis ended up tying for third in the senior men's team event.
Sam Lewis also collected a special trophy from the organisers as he was awarded 'Coach of the Day'.
Club instructor, David Brashaw was extremely pleased with the whole team's effort. He commented "Considering that we have only had about four sessions with these students since most of them graded, it is a terrific result for the club. It is certainly gives a good indication that some of these students will be picked to represent Northern Ireland at the World Championships next year." David also stated "It is great to see so many parents coming along to support their children, to what is always a very long and tiring day
