Karate Stars
At the recent North West Open Karate Championships, which were held in Co Londonderry, kids from Carnalea Karate Club were once again in the medals. The open tournament was attended by approximately 400 young people from all over Ireland and a guest international squad from Wales.
First up for a medal was Kurtis Kane, who was pipped to the gold by a very strong Welsh fighter in the final of the boys under 13 years sparring.
His sister, Levi went one better, collecting a bronze in sparring and her first international bronze for her kata performance.
Neil Bailie came home happiest; with a silver in the U16 team event, a silver in the international open event and a bronze in the under 16 years sparring. There were also good performances from young Andrew Wilson and Christopher Munro at their first North West Open Championships. Coach David Brashaw advised he was delighted with the success, especially for Levi who is now beginning to be a serious contender in the girls kata section.
