Bailie brothers commended by MPs
At the recent North Down Sports Awards, which were held in the Marine Court Hotel two young international karate stars were commended by Lady Sylvia Hermon MP for North Down and Kate Hoey MP, former Sports Minister for Northern Ireland .
Glen Bailie, who was nominated for Young Sports Star of the Year and his elder brother Neil have recently been selected to represent Northern Ireland at the forthcoming WKC World Karate Championships. This will be the second time ever an official Northern Ireland all style team will compete at world level. Two years ago a team of fourteen was the first ever to go to the world finals. At that time it was led by local coach David Brashaw.
Coach Brashaw advised “Preparation for this competition started three years ago. Everyone at the Carnalea Karate Club is delighted with their selection this year.
The event will attract about 2000 competitors from across the world and this time Northern Ireland is hoping to collect some silverware. However, if you consider that some categories have about sixty of the world's best, you can appreciate it is not an easy challenge.”
Both Lady Hermon and Ms Hoey were delighted by the boys karate success and wished them the very best for the championship.
