World's Kids Trials 2003

On Sunday 30 November 2003 Carnalea Wado Kai hosted the Ulster Karate Council's first Northern Ireland children's squad selection event in Ards Leisure Centre.
Over 100 young people aged between 8 and 17 from all over the country participated, each hoping to secure a place on the first ever Northern Ireland junior World Championship squad. Those selected will be going to the WKC World Championships for Children & Juniors which will be taking place on 21st - 24th October 2004 in Darmstadt (Frankfurt/M), Germany.
In previous years these Championships were supported by over 1200 children from countries all over the world. The Ulster Karate Council believes that Northern Ireland children should, especially afer David's unique achievement this year, be part of this huge event.
Squad coach, Jeff Hillis commented "I am delighted with the children's performance today. It is great as a coach to have such a variety of young, determined and talented students to work with." Current World Champion, David Brashaw, made thank-you presentations to various companies for their financial backing over the last ten years, without which, he would not have achieved the pinnacle in karate.
The presentations went to; Mayor of Ards, Jim McBriar, on behalf of Ards Borough Council, Mr Joe Willis, Sales Manager, on behalf of Trandrive Mechanical Engineering, Ivan Martin, General Manager on behalf of the North Down Group fruit and vegetable wholesalers, Mr Derek Harkness on behalf of In-Sport and Mr Terry Boyle, Chairman, of the Ulster Karate Council. Addidional awards were also made to 'Girl of the day', Kealin Murdock and 'Boy of the day', Kevin Murdock. All in all, the day was a fantastic success.
Special thanks goes to all of the coaches and referees who helped with the event and the staff at Ards Leisure Centre for all their assistance with facilities. David will shortly be organising a kata training event for local children.
