Carnalea Karate Club began on Saturday 30 April 1994.
Last Saturday (1 May) it celebrated ten superb years of achievement.
The tenth birthday celebrations were held in the Carnalea Methodist Centre
and were preceded with the highly competitive annual club competition, ‘The Carnalea Basho’.
Over eighty competitors from all over North Down and Ards performed at their best in twelve
categories for the silverware. As expected, from the juniors, age six, up to the veterans,
the standard was extremely high.
Guests of honour were Mayor of North Down, councillor Anne Wilson,
Reverend Ken Lindsay from Carnalea Methodist Church and Mr Leonard Boyd,
the club’s graphic design expert. Special thanks must be given to In-Sport of Newtownards
for suppling twelve categories of trophies and also to Ambutran for their medical support.
This year the basho was followed by a party and we would like to thank all parents who assisted
with the refreshments, set-up cleaning etc.
The special awards from this year’s Basho were as follows:
Student of the Year, The Brashaw Cup – Levi Kane, who was third in last year’s Ulster Championships.
Hardest Trier, The Willis Cup – Charlie Edgar.
Spirit Award, The James Griffin Memorial Shield – Neil Bailie.
