Carnalea Karate man selected to represent Northern Ireland

Carnalea karate Club is delighted that one of its senior students has been selected to fight for Northern Ireland at this weekend's Belfast International Karate Open. Sam Lewis will compete in the under 88kg category and on the Northern Ireland team in what is set to be the largest karate event ever held in Northern Ireland. This World Karate Confederation sanctioned senior international event is being promoted by the Ulster Karate Council and sponsored by Belfast City Council and I.E.S.C.O. of the USA. It is possibly the last ever event to be held in Maysfield Leisure Center. This international competition has attracted competitors from: Egypt, England, Italy (current world team champions), India, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Senegal, Slovenia, Wales, Slovakia, Ukraine, Tunisia, Uzbekistan and of course Northern Ireland. Sam will have to be at his very best as fighters such as Italian "Alfredo" Spina, World Champion Male -68Kg, "Ricardo" Comparin, World silver medallist 78Kg+, will be out to prove their worth. Ulster Karate Council National Coach, Jeff Hillis commented "Sam has trained hard for this event and will certainly be a very difficult fighter to beat. He has taken his fighting ability to a new higher level over the last month or two and is really up for this big competition." Carnalea coach, David Brashaw added "Back in July 2003, when Carnalea joined the Ulster Karate Council, students were advised of the new possibilities to represent Northern Ireland at the highest international level. Sam is one of the first to give it his all and make it happen. Everyone in our clubs are delighted on his selection for this event, and I expect all of them will be going up on Saturday to cheer him on." This Belfast International event will start at 10.30am in Maysfield. A full day's entertainment of world class karate will be available at the special rate of £5.00 per person.
