Over seventy karate competitors from North Down and Ards boroughs came together for the annual Fun Day at Carnalea Karate Club. As always competition was hotly contested by all both in kata (patterns) and kumite (sparring).
Guests of honour this year were Mr Joe Willis and Mr Andy Brashaw, both of who donate annually to assist run the event. The event was also supported by the Roxbury Barber Shop, Bangor and InSport, Newtownards supplied prizes.
All in all the day was a terrific success. Highlights of an exciting day were: the final of the senior boys sparring between Neil and Glen Bailie; the double gold for Niamh Pang at her first competition and the well deserved gold lifted by Joanne Keenan in her first sparring event.
The special awards from this year's Fun Day were as follows:
Student of the Year, – Sarah Brashaw, who lifted double gold at the North West Open and silver at the Carlow International.
Hardest Trier, The Willis Cup – Sarah Shields
Spirit Award, The James Griffin Memorial Shield – Rihannon Wells
