Carlow International 2006

Juniors do us proud in Carlow

Last weekend saw the first ever junior karate team travel from the Bangor club to the Carlow International Karate Tournament.

As always the event was held in the very grand Dolmen Hotel with over 500 competitors from across Ireland , England , Wales , Austria and Hungary competing for the silverware.

Local coach Kevin Lewis was delighted with the children's performances. He explained “We entered two junior teams in the under ten year kata event and were over the moon when they finished third and fourth.

In the individual kata and sparring events everyone was great. They all scored well and most just missed out on the medal places. However, when you consider that many categories had over thirty competitors, everyone can be very proud of their performances. The coaches at Carnalea now will have to seriously consider putting forward some of these young stars for the Northern Ireland junior squad.”

Eleven year old Sarah Brashaw once again showed why she is held in such high esteem. After winning silver medals in the sparring, kata and parent and child expert kata category National Coach Jeff Hills commented “Sarah has once again proved she is one of the best all round karate girls of her age group.”

A special thank you goes out to all of the parents who travelled to Carlow for what as always was very emotional and exciting day. Without this support the children would never get this opportunity to step up to international class. All in all they, like everyone at Carnalea, are very proud of Charlie Edgar, Rhiannon Wells, Courtney Majury, Sophie Stewart, Conor Porter, Craig & Sarah Brashaw, Andrew Wilson and Curtis Shaw.

Back in training once again, some of the children will be being considered for the forthcoming grading and then working on practice for the Family Open Day.

Please note, from next week the Tuesday night classes will move to Monday nights in Carnalea Methodist Centre.
