First ACS Karate Coach for North Down and Ards
Carnalea Karate Club's Kevin Lewis has just become the first karate
ACS coach from the North Down and Ards areas. The qualification
is recognised by Sports Coach UK (The National Coaching
Foundation). The award involved three modules: The first
was compiling and explanation of written evidence for modern
coaching practices, ethics, child protection, fitness and
injury prevention etc. The second was planning, running
and evaluating a number of specialised training sessions
while being scrutinised by an examiner. The third was a
written examination on all of the above areas. Club instructor
and current Senior Men's World WKC Champion, David Brashaw
commented "This is a terrific achievement for Kevin. It
is a difficult qualification to obtain, which requires a
real understanding of modern coaching and training. Once
again it is another first for North Down and Ards through
the Carnalea Club. We are very proud of him".
Kevin, from Newtownards, who achieved a European Kumite
Bronze medal in 2002, and is currently training the seniors
at the Carnalea and Bangor Leisure Centre clubs for the
forthcoming Belfast Senior International Karate Event on
Saturday 27 March. The event, which is sponsored by Belfast
City Council, will be the biggest karate international ever
staged in Northern Ireland. It has already received entries
from the overall current World Champions, Italy, also from
Germany, Slovenia, India, Tunisia, Senegal and of course
all of the home countries. This has already been considerable
media attention in this mini world event and it is sure
to be a huge sell out. If you wish to find out
more about the event you can log on to www.karateni.org
or contact David for tickets at 91 819395.
The club would also wishes to pass on its congratulations
to Chris Lindsay, Kealin Murdock, Laura Ackerman and Sam
Lewis who all successfully completed a nine hour referee
and judging course under World Referee, Mr Terry Boyle.
The course covered level one of WKF and WKC rules. Each
of the students from Carnalea completed it without any difficulties.
They are hoping to progress at the next course to a formal
qualification. If you would like to find out more about
the Carnalea club you can log onto Carnalea
