Last weekend some of the top karate stars from Carnalea were doing what they do best and winning more silverware.
First up was Neil Bailie on the Saturday 8th March when he was represented Northern Ireland at an international event in Queens University. He produced terrific performances both in the kata and kumite (sparring) events, ending the day with bronze and silver respectively. Coach David Brashaw added “Neil has his sights firmly set on winning at this year's junior world championship in October and this is the start of his training for that event.
On Sunday 9th Neil's brother Glen showed once again why he is a world silver medallist in kata when he won his category in the Northern Regions Open in Letterkenny. His coaches Kevin Lewis, Sam Lewis and David who are in training for the European Championships in May showed that they are well in the hunt for medals. Up against the much stronger style of shotokan, as opposed to the club style of Wado Ryu and using WKF rules (flag system) it was always going to be tough. In spite of this Kevin went out on a split decision and David and Sam won gold and silver respectively.
All in all it was a terrific weekend, in what is going to a busy and exciting year for everyone at Carnalea.
